The Earl of Derby Golf Society was founded in
2004 to become an official golf society following many
matches over the years with B.T. and various successful trips
to the emerald isle. The plan to form a proper society is
probably the brainchild of the committee after many late
scoops in the Earl, by the way ,who is the committee? Any
clues tell Nick!!!!
2004 saw a major redec. at h.q. and apart from a
slick modern bar and 8 extra b&b rooms the golf society was
born.
First captain elected by the mystical committee was
Russell (8 iron) Carey a surviving member of many an away
trip. He had a wonderful year at the helm hosting plenty of
golf days for members and guests alike, el capito was in
charge of the first foreign trip which was to be in
Madeira.( don't think anyone drank much of the local wine
but saying that, little Johnny got lost ) A great trip
by all accounts and a big thank you to Palheiro Golf Club
for their kind welcome.
2005 saw Jonathan ( tickedy boo) Powell take over
as captain. Another great man in charge enticing sponsors to
the club which include
Hopwells Frozen Food
Company and
Greene King brewery. So lots of food and booze all round (would the
missing committee have anything to do with this, surely
not!!!)
Following the great success of 2004 Madeira trip,
Palheiro was again to be the venue for the away tour.
Slurping and singing was heard in the clubhouse like never
before when the prizes were presented to the winners of The
Earl of Derby Open.
2006 saw John (young man) Brown as new captain
with his away trip to Connemara at the end of May expected
to be another memory filled event.
The society has a limit of 24 members, each contributing
ten quid a month( for the privilege of meeting the society
president Tadhg (Herr Flick) Moynihan landlord and best
customer of the earl ) which entitles members to a proper
recognised golf handicap, discounted golf, subsidised annual
away tour, social events and plenty of craic.
